Longer Lasting Loops Add A Twist

We are now experiencing the collective realization that wherever “normal” appeared to be two months ago is not a place to which we return. We are also waking up to the underlying truth that our ability to reorient ourselves will depend on our ability to create our own sense of center and purpose, and to engage with the collective from that place with humble tools such as trust, commitment and love.

I started painting Möbius strips several months ago, and had been interested in them as a metaphor for a non-dual, ecofeminist worldview. The Möbius strip, or twisted cylinder is a one-sided, non-orientable surface. It is also a symbol of the unbounded and undifferentiated nature of existence. Physicists theorize that this may well be the shape of our universe.

A being traversing the surface of the Möbius strip travels on the surface and the underside of the strip, yet the moment of transition from one side to the other is impossible to determine. It is always happening: inside is outside, top is bottom. The figure becomes a frame for all-encompassing spaciousness at the center of the wheel, the sweet spot of stillness that enables motion.

According to Wikipedia, “An object that existed in a mobius-strip-shaped universe would be indistinguishable from its own mirror image - this fiddler crab's larger claw switches between left to right with every circulation. It is not impossible that the universe may have this property.”

Wheel (2019, Oil on Panel, 11" x 14")  will be on view in the virtual exhibition, “Radical Hope Show” opening on Thursday, May 28th (on Zoom of course!) 50% of sales on original works go directly to the International Rescue Committee.

Opening and virtual gallery tour Thursday, May 28th, 8-9pm

Remember: the twisted cylinder has many practical uses.
For longer lasting loops, add a twist! 💫

“Giant Möbius strips have been used as conveyor belts that last longer because the entire surface area of the belt gets the same amount of wear, and as continuous-loop recording tapes (to double the playing time). Möbius strips are common in the manufacture of fabric computer printer and typewriter ribbons, as they let the ribbon be twice as wide as the print head while using both halves evenly.” Read full article on Wikipedia.
